What you pay for
- A seat is a licensed member mailbox in your Microsoft 365 directory — the people who send mail.
- Shared and resource mailboxes are free — they're unlicensed, so they never count towards seats, even though they still get a signature.
- Guests and disabled accounts don't count.
Your seat count is read from your directory automatically, so you're only ever billed for the mailboxes you actually have — it goes up and down with your organisation, with no manual seat management.
